Step 5 Trial Balance Spreadsheet

Hi all!!,
I just wanted to post a little something about my company that i’ll include in my assignment..
My company is Clover Corporation and my initial reactions were surprised and intrigued as Clover Corp is in Healthcare industry. My reaction was reflecting on the current crisis the world is facing due to Covid-19. After visiting Clover Corp’s website I was happy to learn that I had received an Australian company compared to unit 11059, where my company was based in the United Kingdom.
Clover Corp started off as family owned business founded by Hamish Drummond, who’s visions were to be able to improve people’s health with the Omega-3 fatty acid. Today, this vision is still partly focused on in the way of delivering stable omega-3 and omega-6 products to the medical food market and also into infant nutrition. Clover Corp are the global leader in delivering and improving infant human health through stable micronutrients.
One of the technologies Clover Corp utilises is called microencapsulation. Microencapsulation is a process where individual particles from active agents are stored within a shell, which is then surrounded or coated by a film of polymeric material. These particles can then be later released by a micrometre or millimetre measure. A benefit from the microencapsulation process is that it protects sensitive oils from oxidation. This particular technology is used to add nutritional oils such as fish, tuna, fungal and algal oils to infant formula, beverages and foods.
Well that’s a little brief for everyone. Please feel free to comment your company information blog posts link below 🙂 Especially if you have a company in the healthcare industry too.

So I’ve been doing some reading of my firm’s annual report and thought I’d blog about a few things..
Maria mentioned in her lecture this week about the balance sheet assets being in order of liquidity (so whichever item is the quickest to turn into cash would come first). My company does not seem to have any order, they have cash ($121.6m) listed last, trade and other receivables ($139.9m) listed second from the top and inventories ($25.7m) is listed at the top of the list. I think that the order should be cash, receivable than inventories (i’m not too sure about where the other items would go).
It was also mentioned in the lecture that some firm’s just don’t use order of liquidity, so I guess mine is one of them or perhaps there is a reason that I have not recognized.

My firm was impacted by a few changes to the IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). Initially I thought they had restated there figures for 2017 twice but this was not the case. They actually had to restate figures for both 2016 and 2017. What confused me was that the ran their balance sheet as at 1st Jan 2017 for the 2016 reporting.
Another takeaway I had from the lecture this week was too look at my firms assets vs liabilities, do the assets outweigh the liabilities? My firms assets are 3 times the amount of their liabilities, I think this is quite substantial.

First thoughts, background information & a little bit about what my firm does ..
My company is called Spirent Communications and I had never heard of them prior to this unit. Initially I was left a little disappointed seeing who was chosen for me as I had hoped I would know of them or at least have a familiarity to the industry they were in, like the automotive industry as I work in a car dealership.
I had my firm’s home page saved in my internet bookmarks for over a week before really taking a look into their website. I clicked on the link through the spreadsheet, downloaded the annual report and then BOOM, 192 glorious pages appeared in a PDF – that’s when I bookmarked the link and decided that I would come back to it later.
Well after returning to my company’s website, I have found out that they are actually quite interesting.
Jack Bowthorpe was the founder of Spirent Communications, though in 1936 when the company was founded, it was known as Goodliffe Electrical Supplies Ltd. Back then the company was a designer and supplier of overhead powerline fittings which, as mentioned in their website history page, is a lot different to what they do today.
Spirent Communications is in the Telecommunications, or Telecom for short, industry. Although I initially thought that this company is probably just like another Telstra I have found that they provide more than a phone or internet plan. In fact, they don’t actually provide phone or internet plans at all. Their main service is developing and providing test systems to vendors who can then ensure that their products are of quality and performance before going to market. For example they test the effectiveness of security products, the performance and speed of cloud based infrastructure and how vehicle navigation systems operate and perform in a real-world environment. And they must be good at what they do because for the second year in a row they were announced as the Leading Lights Awards Outstanding Test & Measurement Vendor of the year.
What I found most interesting is that they are involved in the 5G network. As stated in this blog post and press release 5G is expected to have time and position delays between satellites and antennas because of multipath effects (signals being bounced or reflected off of buildings). Developers are already working on creating better technologies to combat multipath effects however what is absent is having the tool to test that these new technologies will work in the real world. This is where Spirent comes in with their Sim3D environment modelling software.
I could probably go on for days about what my firm is involved in but I would love to hear about the other company’s student have, especially if anyone has another business in the Telecom industry or if its just completely different to mine so feel free to leave a comment below about your firm 🙂
